St. Pius X virtual gala

The annual St. Pius X High School Legacy Gala Auction scheduled for next week will go on, but for the first time, it will be an online event because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

This year the event is being called the St. Pius Legacy Gala Virtual Auction and will include silent auction bids beginning Monday (March 30) and running through 9 p.m. Saturday, April 4.

“This is unprecedented for any of us,” said Melissa Hartmann, the St Pius director of events. “We’re just trying to make the most of the situation.”

Hartmann said the annual event is an important fundraiser for the Catholic school located at 1030 St. Pius Drive in Crystal City.

“Our goal is to raise $100,000,” she said. “It’s part of our budget. It’s critical to our bottom line.”

She said the annual auction will once again offer eye-catching auction items.

“One of the coolest things we have for auction is an evening with the Towel Man, Ron Baechle,” Hartmann said. “The winner gets to go to a Blues game with him.”

Baechle, considered a St. Louis Blues “super fan,” leads the home team crowd in cheers by waving a towel when the Blues score.

Hartmann said another auction item she suspects will grab bidders’ attention also has a connection to the Blues.

“We have a signed poster by Bobby Plager, the Blues great,” she said. “We also have tickets to Cardinals and Blues games.”

The full roster of auction items will not be revealed until bidding starts, Hartmann said.

“On March 30, you’ll be able to preview the items up for bid,” she said. “You must register to see them (and to participate).”
