Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Pony Bird’s annual Great Taste fundraiser will be replaced with an online event this year. The event will include raffles and an online auction that will begin May 11 and run through May 15.
Proceeds from the event will provide badly needed funds for the nonprofit organization – a residential care facility with homes in Mapaville and De Soto for people with profound developmental disabilities, said Pony Bird President and CEO Sara Sucharski.
“This is our largest fundraiser of the year and the revenue helps support our programs that are vital to the individuals we serve,” Sucharski said. “
The Great Taste event, which in the past offered people the chance to sample food and beverages from local restaurants and wineries, was supposed to take place March 21, but was postponed when large gatherings were banned in the county and state because of the pandemic.
Since it is not known when such gatherings will again be allowed, the fundraiser was changed to an online auction, and many impressive items will be available, Sucharski said.
“One of the truly special items is a one-of-a-kind St. Louis Blues commemorative quilt,” she said. “We also have a vacation package to St. Augustine. There’s a recliner donated by Mueller’s in De Soto.
“There’s a Pit Boss wood pellet smoker along with meat from Kenrick’s (Meat & Catering). It comes with the wood pellets and meat for up to 10 guests.”
Artwork created by Pony Bird residents also will be offered for auction, Sucharski said.
She said Pony Bird intends for the Great Taste gathering to return next year.
“We will certainly hope in 2021 to resume our normal events,” Sucharski said.
