Four COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Jefferson County during the week of Dec. 31 through Jan. 6, for a total of 21 deaths from the virus this respiratory season, which began Oct. 1 and runs through mid-May, according to the Jefferson County Health Department.
Nine COVID-19 deaths were reported in October and five were reported in November. Two cases were reported the week of Dec. 17, and one was reported the week of Dec. 24, the Health Department reported.
From Oct. 1 to Jan. 6, the county saw 3,923 COVID cases. During that same time period, 457 flu cases were reported, with 340 type A cases and 117 type B cases, according to the Health Department.
No flu-related deaths have been reported this respiratory season.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 months and older get the recently updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of the illness
In addition, the CDC recommends a flu shot each season for anyone 6 months and older.
