The playground at Crystal City Elementary School, 1100 Mississippi Ave., has been closed since Monday (March 30), and other school district outdoor facilities normally open to the public for exercise and recreation may soon follow, Superintendent Stephen Barnes said Wednesday afternoon (April 1).
The closures are part of social-distancing recommendations health officials have issued, Barnes said.
“It’s our only playground,” Barnes said. “There was a discussion among (leaders of Jefferson County school districts) and the county recommended we close playgrounds. We closed it Monday.
“We have not yet closed our ballfields and track. That may be something we will do.”
Crystal City municipal leaders also have closed playgrounds, courts and other facilities at the city’s parks, said Shelley Steger, the city clerk.
“Everything is closed in the parks except the walking paths,” she said.
