Robert M. Carbaugh, 60, of St. Louis has been charged with burglary, kidnapping, assault and two other felonies in connection with a recent home invasion on Cove Court in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton, court records indicate.
Carbaugh, formerly of House Springs, allegedly was wielding a machete during the home invasion.
At about 9 p.m. Dec. 5, a 29-year-old man was having dinner with a 28-year-old female friend at her home on Cove Court, and Carbaugh allegedly knocked on the front door, the report said.
When the man answered the door, Carbaugh allegedly lunged at him with a machete and swung it at him. The man was able to avoid being struck by the machete, ran from the home and called 911, the probable cause statement said.
In the meantime, Carbaugh allegedly entered the woman’s home and began questioning her about another woman, as well as about money he said was stolen from him and drugs, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.
He allegedly struck the woman in the face with his fist while holding the machete in his other hand, the probable cause statement said.
Then, he held the machete against the woman’s left side and led her by the wrist outside the home while he reportedly searched the area for the other woman, the report said.
Carbaugh allegedly threatened to kill the woman when someone drove by, but when the witness stopped her vehicle, he let go of the woman and began walking away, according to the report.
The woman ran for safety and deputies arrives shortly after and arrested Carbaugh.
Both the male and female victims said they feared for their lives during the encounter, the probable cause statement said.
Carbaugh is a prior offender and currently is on parole for murder in the second degree, the report said.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges against him Dec. 6 for burglary in the first degree, kidnapping and assault in the first degree, all class B felonies; as well as for unlawful use of a weapon, a class D felony, and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony.
Each of the class B felonies carries a penalty of five to 15 years in prison. The class D felony is punishable by up to four years in prison, and the armed criminal action charge is punishable by a minimum of three years.
Carbaugh was being held in the Jefferson County Jail on Friday (Dec. 7) on a $500,000 cash-only bond, said Capt. Ron Arnhart with the Sheriff’s Department.
