Brian Westrich of Arnold submitted photos of his father, the late Herman Westrich, who served in the Korean War.
“Herman Westrich, who lived in Arnold for 50 years, was born Aug. 26, 1928, and died on March 1, 2019, at the age of 90,” he said. “He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, serving in the Korean War from Nov. 16, 1950, to Aug. 15, 1952. His military service included serving on the Korean War front lines as a forward observer for 10 months, where he earned the Bronze Star medal. Later in his life, Herman and his wife, Thelma, loved going to Korean War reunions around the country, and were very actively involved in the Korean War Veterans Association in Jefferson County. He was instrumental in getting the Korean War Memorial built in Washington State Park, which lies near De Soto at the 38th parallel, which also is the dividing line between North and South Korea.”
