Senior quarterback Trey Davis passed for four touchdowns and ran for another as Northwest began the season 1-0 with a 37-27 win against Hillsboro in Cedar Hill on Friday night.
Senior wide receiver Andrew Lenzen caught the first Davis TD to give the Lions a 6-0 lead, then kicked his first of five PATs with 5:21 left in the first quarter. Lenzen accounted for 11 points and intercepted Hillsboro quarterback Griffin Ray with the Hawks at midfield with 3:25 left in the game.
The game featured big offensive plays for both teams, but it was a safety for the Lions in the second quarter when the ball was snapped over Hillsboro punter Austin Romaine’s head and through the end zone that helped Northwest keep a two-score game later on.
Davis completed eight passes to four receivers for 248 yards. Sophomore running back Chase Viehland led the Lions with 43 yards on 13 carries.
With Northwest leading 23-21 late in the fourth quarter, Davis hit senior receiver Brady Cutter for a 48-yard touchdown pass. But Hillsboro junior Tyler Watson trimmed the Lions’ lead to 30-27 with a 45-yard catch and run from Ray with 6:59 left in the game.
Undettered on the next series, Davis found Cutter for a 32-yard gain and junior Mikel Davis capped the drive with a 36-yard TD catch streaking down the sideline. Cutter led Northwest with 14 tackles.
About half of the stands were filled with fans from both teams as attendance was limited to families of the players.
