William Robert Sawyer, 88, of Hillsboro died Dec. 26, 2022, at his home. Mr. Sawyer was a hunter and fisherman and a lifelong sports fan, especially of the Jackson Indians and St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed woodcarving, copper tooling and working with stained glass. Born Nov. 6, 1934, in Cape Girardeau, he was the son of the late Florence “Edna” (Parker) and William “Elmer” Sawyer.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Clara “Dorris” (Hager) Sawyer.
He is survived by a daughter: Claire (Rodney) Vail of Hillsboro; two brothers: James (Carol) Sawyer of O’Fallon and Robert Sawyer of Cape Girardeau; a stepsister: Shirley (Larry) Bock of Gordonville; three grandchildren: Eric Vail, Carolyn (Ben) Schulte and Marie (Remy) Guercio; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Betty Sawyer; and a stepbrother: Don (Darlene) Bonney.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Hope Lutheran Church in High Ridge. Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 2308 Gravois Road, High Ridge, 63049, or Zion Lutheran Church, 9700 Zion Lutheran Road, Hillsboro, 63050. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
