Tim Herbert, 76 of West Linn, Ore., and longtime resident of Crystal City, died Nov. 12, 2018, at his home. At the time of his death, his wife was at his side and they were having morning coffee and listening to his favorite singer, Diana Krall.
Mr. Herbert traveled the world in a four-month journey at age 16, and the experience defined his life. He was a graduate of Crystal City High School and Central Methodist College, and earned a master’s degree from Truman State University.
He retired from Ladue School District in 2000 where he taught mathematics for 34 years. He was also a golf coach and took his team to state tournaments numerous times.
After his retirement from teaching, he and his wife, Patricia, managed the Hotel California on California Avenue in Palo Alto. In 2005, they moved to Stonebridge Country Club in Naples, Fla., where Mr. Herbert spent the next 13 years playing golf full time and working at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort part time, during the winter months, and golfing and exploring Oregon and California with friends and family during the summer months.
Mr. Herbert’s leisure life centered around his love of golf, and he won many tournaments with his partners and solo. His favorite non-golfing activities were his bridge club that never played bridge, vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks with friends and family, reading, walking and listening to jazz.
Born July 13, 1942, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Rolla E. and Velma (Tucker) Herbert, and also was preceded in death by his brother, Rolla “Duke” Herbert.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Buechting) Herbert of West Linn; two sons: Brad (wife Tracy Leadlay) Herbert of West Linn and Bret Herbert (wife Vicki Kriner) of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren: John Herbert and Chase Herbert.
A celebration of Mr. Herbert’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Joachim Golf Club, 959 S. Scenic Drive, in Herculaneum.
