Syble Lea Self, 101, of High Ridge died May 31, 2021, in Eureka. Mrs. Self served as a U.S. Naval Officer during World War II. She was a teacher at High Ridge Elementary and was very active at St. Martin United Church of Christ in Dittmer. She enjoyed traveling, camping and reading. Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Detroit, Texas, she was the daughter of the late William Lewis and Timmie Arene (Finley) McCormack. She was preceded in death by her husband: Glen Farris Self.
She is survived by three children: Glen (Barbara) Self of Palmyra, Va., Donald (Grace) Self of Eureka and Edward Self of High Ridge; five grandchildren: Jayme (Jorge), Caitlin (Zac), Greg, Alex and Tommy (Anna); four great-grandchildren: Adrian, Alexis, Caleb and Leah; a brother-in-law: Frank Foster; and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by four siblings: Edward McCormack, William Spence McCormack, Jean Roberson and Vernelle Foster.
Visitation is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6300 Hwy. 30, in Cedar Hill. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 7, at St. Martin United Church of Christ, 3229 High Ridge Blvd., in High Ridge. Burial will follow in St. Martin Cemetery in High Ridge. Memorials may be made to St. Martin U.C.C. in High Ridge or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary.
