Gary Mitchell Underwood, 75, of Festus died Aug. 5, 2025, at de Greeff Hospice House in St. Louis. Mr. Underwood spent much of his career working for Illinois Power. He was known as a hardworking man, but he truly came alive when he was outdoors or surrounded by music. He loved hunting and fishing, was a big fan of Blues music and for more than 35 years, he sang with his gospel group, The Sounds of Joy. He also was known for having a generous spirit and was quick to lend a hand to those in need. Dedicated to his faith and community, he served on several boards and organizations over the years, including the Festus City Council, Jefferson College Foundation and was president of the Jefferson County Rescue Mission. He also took part in Concerned Parents and the Missouri Black Chamber of Commerce. He believed in showing up and doing the work to make things better. He was the first African American to attend and to graduate from St. Pius X in 1968 and later was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Born March 9, 1950, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Lester William and Blondell Mary (Riney) Underwood.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years: Lois Lynn (Lucas) Underwood of Festus, whom he married on Jan. 18, 1975, at Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus; two sons: Bryce (Melanie) Underwood and Jordan (Amber) Underwood, both of Festus; three grandchildren: Maliyah, Laila and Mitchell Underwood; two sisters: Diane (Underwood) Selmon of Crystal City and Pamela Cook of Foley, Ala.; a goddaughter: Macheal Cook; a godson: Curtis Blanks Jr.; and many other family members and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Dennis, Leslie and Rodney "Wood" Underwood; and his niece and goddaughter: Della Marie Selmon.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Ave., in Festus. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Second Baptist Church, 723 Horine Road, in Festus, officiated by Elder Charles Culton. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to the Lester, Leslie & Blondell Underwood Family Award or to the Jefferson College Foundation, 1000 Viking Drive, Hillsboro, 63050. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
