Donald Walter Achter, 88, of Pevely died Aug. 27, 2026, at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County. Mr. Achter was a retired easement negotiator for the Missouri Department of Transportation and Accountant. He was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pevely, the former Pevely Lion’s Club, Show Me Antique Car Club and served six years with the Missouri Army National Guard. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to many places, including Hawaii, Ireland, Alaska and some St. Louis Cardinals cruises. He also enjoyed his time with his family and friends, watching sports, especially the Cardinals, and being a busybody outside, especially when it included lending a helping hand to others. Born July 16, 1938, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Dora (Jeude) and Walter Achter.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Joan (Meyer) Achter.
He is survived by a daughter: Judy (Michael) Fischer of Pevely; a son: James (Debbie) Achter of Pevely; five grandchildren: Drew Achter, Cody Achter, Kaitlyn Fischer, Adam Fischer and Emily (Joey) Bell; and three great-grandchildren: Hayden Achter, Logan Bell and Jase Bell.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Vinyard Hillcrest Funeral Home, 9115 Commercial Blvd., in Pevely. Visitation will resume from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 Central Ave., in Pevely, officiated by Pastor Bryan Roberts. Interment will follow in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Pevely. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Hillcrest Funeral Home.
