Donald Lloyd “Duck” Shores, 86, of Crystal City died Sept. 8, 2026, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Shores was a 1957 graduate of Festus High School. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and lived by the motto “once a Marine, always a Marine.” He later worked at Liguori Publications and retired in 2002 after 37 years of employment. He joined Montford Point Marine Corps Association in 2007, becoming a lifetime member. He was a member of the Missouri Horseshoe Pitching Association. He loved to fish and play horseshoes. He was also a lifelong member of Ward Chapel AME Church in Festus, and he was known for the barbecue he cooked for the church’s fundraisers. Born Feb. 12, 1940, in Festus, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Clay) Shores and Izell Shores.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years: Carol (Cook) Shores.
He is survived by three sons: Darrin (Kim) Shores of Pevely, Donald A. Shores of Festus and Charles (Sherry) Shores of Festus; four sisters-in-law: Sharon Riney, Denise (Ernest) Brown, Cecelia (Pat) Kinder and Gloria Byas; three brothers-in-law: Alvin (Connie) Riney, Jerry Riney and Dennis (Idis) Riney; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
He also was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy Lillian (the late William) Cayce and Charlene Keaton; a brother: Stephen Shores; a sister-in-law: Cheryl Morgan; a brother-in-law: Robert (Betty survives) Cook; and a grandson: DeSean Shores.
Visitation is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Interment with full military honors will follow in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
