Michael A. Sardo, 85, of Festus died Nov. 28, 2017, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mike and his wife, Louise, founded and directed the Jefferson County Rescue Mission in Pevely. While living in New York City he was a big band trombone player and furniture salesman, and developed a love for classical music and animals. He wrote several poetry books, two science-fiction novels and a book of essays. He was a longtime member and Paul Harris Fellow in the Festus-Crystal City Rotary Club and member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Festus. Born Dec. 2, 1931, in Laurelton, Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Theresa (Barberi) and Joseph Sardo. He is survived by his wife: Louise (Scotti) Sardo.
He is survived by three sons: Joseph Michael (Laura) Sardo of Springfield, John Christopher Sardo of Festus and James Steven (Kathy) Sardo of Festus; five grandchildren: Joseph A. (Nicole) Sardo, Rachel (Andres) Lara, Emily Sardo, Annamarie Jolee Sardo and Nikki Rae Sardo; and three great-grandchildren: Evelyn Louise, Henry Joseph and Edward Michael Sardo.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., Festus, officiated by Pastor John Piet. Burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Pevely. Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Rescue Mission. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
