Sutton, Donald

Donald L. "Don" Sutton, 91, of Palmyra died March 16, 2022, at Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal. Mr. Sutton served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting deer and rabbits or sitting on the riverbank with a fishing pole. He enjoyed travel, especially to Arizona, New Orleans and Minnesota, and he always looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada. When not enjoying the outdoors, you could find him watching a good John Wayne western movie or war documentary. He volunteered with the local VFW, especially fish fries and soup suppers. He was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Palmyra, the son of the late Joseph and Gertrude Lowe Sutton. He was preceded in death by his wife: Pauline Ruth Krietemeyer, whom he married Sept. 4, 1976, and who died May 15, 2019. 

He is survived by his second wife: Frances Drebes Kroeger Sutton, whom he married on Sept. 14, 2019; five children: Alan (Kay) Sutton of Festus, John Krietemeyer of Palmyra, Donnie Sutton of Festus, Gail (Bill) Guidicy of Festus and Pam (Gary) Slabby of Festus; a brother: Glen (Linda) Schaefer of Rensselaer; three stepchildren: Kay (John) Thies of Minnesota; Cynthia (Steve) Sieloff of Wildwood and Kerry M. (Wayne) Pancoast of Topeka, Kan.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by a sister: JoAnn Becker; and a stepson: Charles L. Kroger.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 p.m. until a funeral service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Home, 424 S. Main St., in Palmyra. Burial with full military rites by American Legion Post 174 Boots-Dickson will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra, officiated by Pastor Dwayne Lorenson. Memorials may be made to the VFW post in Palmyra or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.
