Wizard of Oz characters

If you love the “Wizard of Oz,” you don’t want to miss the Windsor High School Drama Club’s interactive movie night from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the classic film will be shown.

Those who attend the screening will be encouraged to participate in the show. They may dress up like characters and play and sing along as the movie is shown. There also will be costume contests and attendance prizes.

The screening will be held on the Windsor practice football field next to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office substation and the school’s tennis courts on the main campus of Hwy. 61-67 in Imperial.

Admission to the screening is $10 a person. T-shirts will be sold, too.

Proceeds will benefit the Drama Club’s community service project called Smiles for Kids with Cancer, said Windsor High teacher Michelle Dalaviras, who sponsors the Drama Club.

As part of the project, students plan to dress up as “Wizard of Oz” characters and visit children who are hospitalized for cancer treatment, Dalaviras said.

She said a Windsor student who has been involved in the school’s drama productions, Thespian Society and Speech Team has been fighting cancer since 2013 and suggested the project.

Dalaviras said the student wants to remain anonymous and doesn’t want anyone raising money for her or her family, but she wants to help other children who have cancer and came up with the idea to dress up as characters and visit them.

So, the Windsor Drama Club has begun raising money to buy costumes for the service project.

Dalaviras said the Drama Club is planning its first hospital visit for sometime in October, and the movie night is a major fundraiser for the project.

Donations and sponsorships are sought. To make a donation, email Dalaviras at mdalaviras@windsor.k12.mo.us.

Movie night attendees may arrive before the start of the show to set up blankets and lawn chairs, she said.
