Construction is set to start soon on nearly $12 million in improvement projects at Windsor Intermediate Center and Windsor High School, both in Imperial, Windsor C-1 Superintendent Jason King announced at the Dec. 20 Board of Education meeting.
“In early January, they will start grading and prep work at the high school,” King said. “Next, in late January, they’ll start demolition work at the Intermediate Center. Sometime in February, construction work will start.”
The improvements will include renovations at Windsor High School and an addition at Windsor Intermediate Center.
Windsor Intermediate Center will get a new gymnasium and family and consumer sciences facilities. At Windsor High School, both the kitchen and its athletic facilities will be renovated.
In November, the school board awarded an $11.79 million contract to Brockmiller Construction in Farmington for the project.
However, King said on Dec. 20 that the projects had come down by about $74,000 since then, following discussions he had with Brockmiller.
When the board awarded the construction contract to Brockmiller, which submitted the lowest of five bids for the project, it also authorized King to negotiate with the company.
King said the discussions focused on materials that will be used during the construction.
“We will have some substantial savings on materials,” he said. “The materials will be of equal quality without sacrificing the structural integrity of the projects.”
The improvements will be paid for with proceeds from a $20 million bond issue voters approved in April 2022.
