The crowd gathered on July 14 to see the first few minutes of "Coco" before a thunderstorm through the area caused the cancellation of a drive-in movie night in Pevely. Organizers will try again on Saturday (July 28).

The Pevely Parks and Recreation Board will try again Saturday (July 28) to put on its “Movie Night at the Pevely Drive-In Theater” after thunderstorms washed out the first attempt on July 14.

Parks and Recreation Board chairwoman Heather Clayton, speaking at Monday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, said a large crowd showed up Saturday at the long-ago closed drive-in at 8773 Commercial Blvd. only to be disappointed by Mother Nature.

The parks board planned to show two films – “Coco” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”

After it got dark enough to project the films, “Coco” was started, but it started raining about five minutes later, so the event was called off and later rescheduled, Clayton said.

She said she was impressed with the turnout, despite the weather.

“We had about 100 cars and about 500 people waiting for the movies to start,” Clayton said.

Clayton said the same two movies will be shown, starting at dusk. Gates will open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Vehicles are to be parked nearby, not in the old drive-in vehicle spaces. So, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on while they watch movies from the field in front of the screen. No alcohol will be allowed. The parks board will sell food.

Clayton said Fun Flicks St. Louis, the company hired to present the films, brings a powerful sound system, so attendees don’t need to bring radios to hear the movies. Many drive-in theaters in operation today require attendees to bring their own radios and tune in to specific stations so they can hear the movies being shown.

“Fun Flicks St. Louis brought in great big speakers,” Clayton said.

One of the drive-in’s former owners estimated that movies have not been shown there since the 1970s. The facility at one time was called the Sixty-One South Drive-In.
