COLUMBIA — Jury selection began Tuesday in trial for Sarah Brown, who is accused in the death of a baby girl at a home day center more than two years ago.
On Tuesday, 85 people were called to the Boone County Courthouse for the jury selection process.
Brown, of Columbia, is charged in the death of 3-month-old Ayla Gibson, who was found dead in Brown's home. Brown ran an at-home day care business.
Brown is charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter.
She is accused of placing the baby in the crib with a loose blanket and a pillow that led to the suffocation of the infant. However, authorities also accused her of lying to police about how she found the infant.
Court documents alleged Brown ran an unlicensed day care for over half a dozen children, which Missouri law prohibits without proper licensing.
If convicted, Brown could face three to 10 years in prison. The trial is set to last four days.
