A Hartsburg man was booked in the Boone County Jail Tuesday for allegedly attempting to set fire to a camper with a woman inside, according to court documents.

Michael Briggs is charged with knowingly burning or exploding and resisting arrest, according to court documents. He's being held on a $10,000 cash or surety bond, according to court records.

An officer located him at 31 S. First Street in Hartsburg setting fire to and pouring gas on a custom cabinet five feet from the camper, according to court documents.

Briggs allegedly had a red gas can in his right hand and a lighter in his left, and despite numerous commands to put the gas can down, Briggs refused and continued pouring it, according to documents.

The woman inside the camper said she wanted to press charges and said Briggs had tried to burn her things in the past, according to court documents.

The incident began when Briggs used a woman's phone to call True North of Columbia and said he was going to kill a woman if True North wasn't able to help, according to court documents.

True North put Briggs on hold, after which he handed the phone back to the woman and told her to call 911 because he was going to kill her, according to court documents.
