Olympic triathlete Sarah Haskins, a St. Louis native, is scheduled to participate in the fifth annual Keep Your Eyes on the Pies 5K, set for Saturday, Aug. 29, in Kimmswick.
Haskins competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, won the gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games and is training for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The deadline to get the $30 advance registration rate for the Kimmswick 5K is today at midnight. After that, the entry fee is higher.
Proceeds will benefit the ALS Association and the medical fund for Nancy Ratliff, a local resident and former daycare teacher who was diagnosed with ALS in 2009.
On the day of the race, registration will begin about 6:30 a.m. at the Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery in Kimmswick, which sponsors and organizes the event.
The 5K starts at 8 a.m. The event also includes a 1-mile fun run and walk, which begins at 8:45 a.m.
Those who enter the 5K will receive a “tech shirt,” and those in the 1-mile run/walk will get a cotton T-shirt.
Participants also will get a box lunch and complimentary beverages and snacks.
The overall male winner and the overall female winner each will receive one of the Blue Owl’s levee-high caramel apple pecan pies.
Winners in each age category will receive a mini pie.
The 5K course runs along the Mississippi River through Kimmswick, including around the Anheuser estate and Windsor Harbor Bridge (the oldest known wrought iron bridge in the state).
In addition to the 5K and 1-mile run/walk, the event will include a silent auction, raffles, attendance prizes, music and other activities.
The St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird will make an appearance, and St. Louis news anchor Dan Gray will emcee
In addition, vendors will be on hand providing services and selling food and merchandise.
“We expect to have a great crowd,” Blue Owl owner Mary Hostetter said.
Typically, 500 people take part in the event.
Fleet Feet will provide timing for the race and also is handling registration.
