With the start of the new school year just around the corner, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to watch out for children.
“To avoid any tragedies, please be cautious in your travels near or within school zones, and school bus stops,” the Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 11 written statement. “Please abide by established laws related to yielding to school buses loading or unloading students. Allow extra commute time to avoid being hurried because of unexpected delays linked to increased school bus activities.”
The Sheriff’s Office says that driver inattention is “a contributing factor in most vehicle crashes.” Pedestrians also need to pay attention while they're walking along streets.
“Please pay attention and be vigilant of your surroundings and avoid distractions during the operation of your motor vehicles and during travels on foot,” the report said.
