Scouting for Food

Hundreds of Boy Scouts will stop by homes this Saturday (Nov. 15) to collect bags of food for local food pantries.

The collection is part of the annual Scouting for Food campaign, the largest one-day food drive in the region. This is the 30th year Scouting for Food has been held in the St. Louis area.

Jefferson County has about 2,500 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts – members of about 70 Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs. Most of those troops and packs will have boys participating in the food drive, said Zoran Lazic of the Boy Scouts River Trails District, which covers Jefferson County.

Last Saturday, the boys left empty bags at home’s so local residents can fill them with canned goods and other nonperishable food items and leave them at their front doors to be picked up.

The boys will return this Saturday to pick up the bags. The food, then, will be delivered to food pantries around the county.

Most food pantries need food this time of year, as winter and the holiday season approaches.

All canned good are welcome, but food pantries especially need canned tuna and meats and other canned goods that provide protein, like soups, chilis and stews.
