Versay L. Kennell, 50, of Eureka has been charged with two counts of domestic assault. He allegedly attacked a woman at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Woods Circle, Eureka Police reported.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Kennell on Sept. 2 with second-degree assault, a class D felony punishable by up to seven years in prison, and third-degree domestic assault, a class E felony that carries a penalty of up to four years in prison, court records show.
Kennell was being held Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the St. Louis County Jail on a $75,000 cash-only bond, according to court documents.
Eureka Police were called to the apartment complex on Sept. 1 following the alleged attack. Kennell had returned home from a bar and argued with the woman in his home, the report said.
The woman tried to leave the apartment, but Kennell allegedly grabbed her throat and choked her. He let go of the woman’s throat, but then he grabbed her by the arm and chest, Eureka Police reported.
The woman was able to get away from Kennell, and she called her mother. The victim’s mother called the police, according to the report.
“Just because you have been intimate with someone does not give you the right to put your hands on them,” St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell said in a statement announcing the charges against Kennell. “Domestic violence will be prosecuted aggressively in St. Louis County.”
