Two Pevely women hurt in separate apartment fires

Fire damaged the No. 2 Ashton Village apartments in Pevely.

Two women were injured in separate apartment fires in Pevely on June 29, Dunklin Fire Chief Brad Williams reported.

He said his district received a call on the first fire a few minutes after midnight at the Pevely Pointe Apartments in the 900 block of Pevely Pointe Drive.

He said the lone occupant, a woman, was transported to an area hospital by the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District for burn injuries. He said he did not know the extent of her injuries.

“It was a little after midnight,” he said today, July 1. “It was a cooking fire. She was cooking something and it caught fire. It was a grease fire. It was out when we got there. They did not have to clear the building.”

Firefighters remained on the scene for about 45 minutes, he said.

He said there was no known damage to the apartment and no firefighters were injured.

The Festus and Herculaneum fire departments and the Antonia and Rock Community fire protection districts assisted with the fire and the Jefferson R-7 district covered Dunklin’s other calls during the incident.

“Since it was an apartment building, we considered it a commercial fire, so a few more trucks were called out,” Williams said.

He said the second apartment fire call came about 9 p.m. that day.

“It was at No. 2 Ashton Village (apartment complex),” Williams said. “It used to be the Pevely Square Apartments. There was a fire in an apartment. It was contained to the living room. The cause is undetermined after an investigation.”

He said investigators determined the fire at the three-building was not suspicious.

“The lone occupant, an elderly woman, was taken to an area hospital by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance with burn injuries,” Williams said, adding he did not know the extent of her injuries.

He said the building had to be evacuated.

“The apartment occupants had to leave,” he said. “There was extensive smoke and water damage. There was smoke damage throughout the building. There was no structural damage. They should be able to repair.”

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 11 p.m.

He said the same fire departments and districts that assisted in the first fire also helped with the second fire.
