jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of an SUV from outside a home in the 900 block of Falcon Drive in Imperial. During the same period that white 2008 Honda Pilot was stolen, at least three people were seen trying to get into vehicles in the neighborhood, authorities reported.

At about 2:50 a.m. May 11, a woman’s surveillance camera showed someone try to open her car door. When the person realized the car was locked, he went to her neighbor’s home and discovered the Pilot was not locked, the Sheriff's Office reported.

The man who owns the Pilot told deputies the SUV was unlocked with the keys inside it. The Pilot was worth about $10,000, the report said.

Deputies discovered other unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood, but no one else reported anything stolen. Surveillance footage showed at least three people trying to get into vehicles in the area. In addition, surveillance footage from a Ring camera showed a white BMW SUV on the street during the same period, according to the report.

As of May 16, the Pilot had not been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, spokesman Grant Bissell said. Anyone with information about the incident should call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
