Firefighters spent several hours on March 20 and then again on March 21 battling brush fires along Sulphur Springs Road between the Simpson Construction Material quarry and the railroad tracks, said Ron Harder, spokesman for the Rock Community Fire Protection District.
No one was hurt.
He said the fire was on bluffs and cliffs, so it was difficult for firefighters to get to it, especially hauling equipment.
“It was not the size of it (the fire), but the danger of where it was and the difficulty of getting to it,” Harder said. “They (firefighters) had to Billy goat it up there.”
Rock Fire got a call about 6 p.m. March 20 about a brush fire in the area and were on the scene until about 11 p.m. that day.
The fire district got a call the next afternoon about another brush fire in the area and it again took several hours to put out the fire, Harder said.
He said the fire district had to call to stop a train from coming through the area while they were working to put out the fire.
Harder said dry conditions contributed to the brush fires, but the exact cause is unknown.
“When everything’s that dry, it spreads so quickly, but no structures were involved,” he said.
