jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the reported theft of a 1998 Ford Ranger that had broken down near an intersection east of De Soto. The pickup was left unlocked, and there were no reports of it being towed, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The owner said the Ranger broke down at about 8 p.m. Sept. 10 while he was driving east on Hwy. 110. He said he took the keys with him after leaving the pickup on the side of the highway near Fountain City Road, the report said.

The man said he returned to the intersection at about 8 p.m. Sept. 11, and the pickup was gone. The Ranger is worth about $4,000, according to the report.

As of Sept. 20, the pickup had not been recovered, and no suspects have been identified, spokesman Grant Bissell said. He asks anyone with information about the incident to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
