A Pevely man died this morning (Nov. 10) while working on a construction project at the Blanchette Memorial Bridge on I-70 that connects St. Louis and St. Charles counties, authorities reported.

At about 7:55 a.m., Alan Jackson, 59, was operating a piece of machinery while working on the underside of the bridge, and both the machinery and Jackson fell about 75 feet, Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson said.

“The machinery – it’s like an enclosed-cab piece of machinery,” Thompson said. “(Jackson) was operating the machinery hauling something down or pulling something up and the weight shifted. It became unbalanced and rolled off that part of the bridge.

“We don’t see any foul play or malice,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be an accident.”

Jackson was transported to an area hospital, where he died about 8:45 a.m., Thompson said.

KCI Construction Co. of St. Louis reportedly was the contractor on the $33 million project to renovate and upgrade the bridge.
