Arnold Police Det. Cpl. Josh Wineinger and Leader reporter Tony Krausz contributed to a podcast about Loril William Harp confessing to murdering Arnold liquor store owner Steve Weltig in 1993. The podcast, “Crime Stories with Nancy Grace,” was released on Tuesday, March 12.
The episode focuses on the nearly 30-year investigation. Weltig, 40, was shot and killed on April 23, 1993, while he was working at what used to be Ajax Liquor store, 1409 Jeffco Blvd. in Arnold.
In September 2020, Harp confessed to the murder while he was interviewed by Wineinger and Det. Cpl. Brett Ackermann at a retirement community on South Broadway in St. Louis, according to a probable-cause statement from the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Former Arnold Police Chief Bob Shockey said 15 detectives from the department worked on the case for 27 years, and members of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis and cold-case investigators from England have reviewed the case.
Grace is a television journalist and a former prosecuting attorney. The episode also features Darryl Cohen, a former Fulton County, Ga., assistant district attorney and former Florida assistant state attorney; Jorey Krawczyn, a police psychologist; and Kendall Crowns, the chief medical examiner for Tarrant County in Fort Worth, Texas.
