The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify a suspect after a car was stolen and the victim’s debit card was used multiple times to make purchases. The car was later recovered in East St. Louis, Ill., police reported.

The victim told deputies he parked his black 2019 Kia Forte at about 10:30 p.m. July 17 outside a home in the 600 block of Chancellor Lane in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton. He discovered the car had been stolen at about 8:30 a.m. July 18, the report said.

The victim’s wallet was in the car, which was locked. He said a reloadable Walmart MoneyCard was used to make purchases at four different gas stations in St. Louis and St. Louis County, according to the report.

The Sheriff’s Office does not report the approximate values of stolen vehicles, and it did not report how much money was charged to the debit card.

As of Aug. 7, the stolen wallet had not been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, spokesman Grant Bissell said. He asks anyone with information about the theft to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
