jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of items from a backhoe owned by the Jefferson County Public Works Department. The backhoe was locked when it was left in the 4200 block of Schenk Road in Barnhart, Public Works Director Jason Jonas said.

He said the theft occurred during the overnight hours between Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 and there were no signs the backhoe’s lock had been damaged or any windows had been broken to get inside the machine.

Jonas said a Motorola radio, gloves, a towing chain and two tape measures were stolen from the backhoe. He said the items’ estimated value was $900.

As of Oct. 10, none of the items had been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said. He asks anyone with information about the theft to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
