A 33-year-old House Springs woman who worked at a fast-food restaurant in House Springs allegedly used a customer’s credit card. She allegedly charged nearly $1,000 on the card after getting personal information from the customer, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

On Jan. 17, the woman, who was working at Hardee’s, 4699 Gravois Road, reportedly asked the customer, a 33-year-old St. Louis man, for his ZIP code when he made a purchase with a credit card at the restaurant. At 8:10 p.m., the man was notified that someone tried to use his card to make purchases of $530, $350 and $98, the report said.

The victim told authorities only the $350 purchase was charged to his card, and the other two were declined. He said when he was asked for his ZIP code at the restaurant, he “didn’t think anything of it and gave (the employee) his ZIP code,” according to the report.

Deputies located the woman at the restaurant, where she was arrested. The Sheriff’s Office will seek charges against her through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for stealing and fraudulent use of a credit card, spokesman Grant Bissell said.

The Sheriff’s Office warns there is no reason a fast-food restaurant should need a ZIP code to complete a credit card transaction and customers should not provide that information if asked by a cashier.
