A fire destroyed a vacant mobile home in the 4700 block of Wedgewood Drive in House Springs on Sept. 13. High Ridge Fire Chief John Barton said no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:42 p.m. and could see black smoke billowing from the single-wide mobile home from the House Springs fire station.
“It was a single-wide mobile home that was fully involved when they got there,” Barton said. “We had been told by neighbors on both sides of the house that it’s been vacant for several months. We did search the structure as much as we could, just as a precaution. We didn’t find any victims and there were no injuries.”
The fire was put out by 2:36 p.m., and the last fire truck left the scene at 4:13 p.m., Barton said.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.
Firefighters were challenged by the steep and crumbling road leading up to the neighborhood, Barton said. Once crews arrived, they found the fire hydrant was not functioning correctly, and there was a limited water supply, he said.
He said the road is the only way in and out of the neighborhood, meaning many of the nearby residents were stuck in their homes for the duration of the fire attack since the emergency vehicles blocked the exit.
