A fire destroyed a Hillsboro mobile home and displaced the mother and adult daughter who lived there, Hillsboro Fire reported.

Chief Brian Gaudet, in a written statement, said his fire district was called at about 1:35 p.m. Nov. 16 to the 5500 block of Whitehead Road. The mother and her adult daughter as well as a pet had safely exited the mobile home before firefighters arrived.

“I believe there was a dog,” he said. “There were no injuries to residents, pets or firefighters.”

He said heavy smoke could be seen when firefighters arrived.

“Crews made entry through the front of the structure, beginning initial first attack and conducting a primary search of any remaining occupants,” according to the statement. “The fire was quickly brought under control at 2:14 p.m.”

Gaudet said crews remained on the scene until 3:21 p.m. “to extinguish remaining hot spots and ensure the fire was fully out.”

Firefighters salvaged some personal belongings for the occupants, he said.

Gaudet said authorities contacted the American Red Cross to assist the displaced women.

“Following investigation into the origin and cause of the fire, it was determined that a small brush fire had ignited from a bonfire the residents had several days earlier, which was still smoldering. Low humidity and winds contributed to the fire spreading rapidly to the mobile home,” he said.

On Nov. 17, Gaudet stressed that people need to make sure any outdoor fires are completely out under current dry conditions.

The De Soto Fire Department and the De Soto Rural, Mapaville, Goldman and Cedar Hill fire protection districts, as well as Valle Ambulance and Jefferson County 911 Dispatch assisted Hillsboro with the call.
