A Hillsboro-area man allegedly attacked a woman he is related to in her home and fired a gun at her at least twice before leaving with the weapon and other items, court records said.
Nathan Andrew Hickam, 43, who lives east of Hillsboro on June 3 was charged with two counts of first-degree domestic assault, a class B felony; unlawful possession of a firearm, a class C felony; stealing a firearm and tampering or attempting to tamper with a victim in a felony prosecution, both class D felonies; and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony, according to court documents.
He was arrested on June 3, and as of June 5, he was being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court records said.
Hickam was on probation at the time of the alleged assault after pleading guilty to second-degree assault in April 2017. He also pleaded guilty to second-degree domestic assault in May 2010, according to court documents.
Due to Hickam’s prior convictions, the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the domestic assault charges as class A felonies, which are punishable by 10 to 30 years or life in prison; the unlawful possession of a firearm charge as a class B felony, which carries a penalty of five to 15 years in prison; and the stealing and tampering charges as class C felonies, which are punishable by three to 10 years in prison,.
The armed criminal action charge carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison.
According to the probable-cause statement, Hickam went to a home in the 100 block of El Vado Drive east of Hillsboro and started arguing with the woman. He allegedly pinned her down during the argument, choked her and threatened to kill her.
Hickam then got off the woman, got her gun and shot at the woman, who told investigators the bullet grazed her head and went through multiple walls, the report said.
Hickam then allegedly dragged the woman by her throat down a hallway, threw her down and shot at her again. He then went to the kitchen, where he destroyed items before leaving the home, according to the report.
Hickam stole the woman’s gun, medication and iPhone to prevent her from calling the police, the report said.
