Jeffrey Carpenter and Kelly Newkirk win De Soto Life-Saving Award

Jeffrey Carpenter of De Soto Chiropractic, left, and Kelly Newkirk of Victoria each received a Life-Saving Award from the De Soto City Council.

Chiropractor Jeffrey Carpenter, who owns and operates De Soto Chiropractic, and Kelly Newkirk of Victoria each received a Life-Saving Award from the De Soto City Council at its monthly meeting July 17. De Soto Police Chief Rich Draper said the two men, along with a third unidentified man, stopped to help Henry Hill, 76, of Potosi after Hill blacked out and drove off Fountain City Road into the De Soto city lagoon on June 5.

The three men jumped into the lagoon and pulled Hill out of the water, Draper said.

“(Hill) and his family all believe that had it not been for the actions of the three men who stopped that day, he would have died,” Draper said.

“It’s not too often that you get to see a real hero,” De Soto Mayor Larry Sanders added. “If you save somebody’s life, you’re a hero.”
