A fire destroyed a garage in the 3900 block of Fountain City Road east of De Soto on Thursday night, Feb. 22, De Soto Rural Deputy Fire Chief John Scullin.
He said the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District got a call at 11:30 p.m. about the garage fire, which was endangering the attached single-story house. A crew of firefighters had just returned to the firehouse after spending five hours battling a large brush fire in the Richwoods area in Washington County. Because of that, it took firefighters only nine minutes to arrive to the call.
“The garage was well-involved on arrival,” Scullin said. “(Firefighters) did save the house.”
A car, which was in the garage, was destroyed in the fire.
He said firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes but salvage and overhaul took several hours. Firefighters had to remove everything from the garage to make certain the fire was completely extinguished, and they remained on the scene until 4:15 a.m.
The De Soto and Festus fire departments and the Hematite, Hillsboro and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts helped with the call. The Valle Ambulance District also responded to the scene.
