A scammer called a Festus man today (Feb. 9) and claimed to be an Internal Revenue Service employee and demanded money, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said.
“Our advice to people is to hang up the phone. The IRS will not call you. They’ll send a letter,” Lewis said.
He said scams crop up every year during tax season.
“If anyone calls you (claiming to be from the IRS) and says you have to send in money now and send it by Western Union, hang up,” he said. “Everyone has due process. The IRS would send you a letter.”
