A two-story home in the 1400 block of Glacier Pass in Festus was “heavily damaged’ by fire early Monday (July 5). The three people who live there were home at the time but got out OK, along with their dog, Festus Fire Chief Kevin Cremer said.
Festus Fire got a call just after midnight about the fire, which started in the garage.
“When we got on the scene, the garage was fully involved, and the garage roof had collapsed on itself, and the fire had spread to the second-story attic,” Cremer said.
He said when the fire broke out, a man was asleep upstairs, and two women, who were awake and in the basement, “noticed a glow and went and looked and saw it was their house on fire.”
Cremer said the residents had working smoke alarms, but when the residents noticed the fire, it had not spread to the house yet, and the detectors had not gone off.
As of Tuesday, the cause of the fire was unknown, he said.
Cremer said firefighters had the blaze under control in about an hour, and crews remained on the scene for about four hours.
He said the Crystal City and Herculaneum fire departments and the Hematite, Dunklin, Mapaville and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts helped with the call, and the Rock Community Fire Protection District moved up to cover the Festus firehouse. The Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District also responded to the scene.
