Eureka Police arrested a 34-year-old man and 40-year-old man, both of Pacific, for alleged drug possession after an officer came to help them with a van they were pushing out of the intersection of Six Flags Road and the I-44 eastbound off ramp, Capt. Michael Werges said.

At about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 26, an officer saw the men pushing a 2006 Dodge Caravan in the intersection. When he turned on his vehicle’s emergency lights, the older man stopped pushing the van, grabbed a backpack from inside the Caravan and walked quickly north on Six Flags Road, the report said.

The man who remained with van was wanted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for failure to appear in court. After he was arrested, the man allegedly said everything in the van belonged to him, according to the report.

When an officer searched the van, he allegedly found a sunglass case that had two used syringes, a used glass pipe and a bag with a crystal-like substance inside it, the report said.

The man who fled when the officer approached the van was stopped by an officer nearby in the area of Fifth Street. He was wanted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for possession of an illegal substance, according to the report.

The man allegedly said there were illegal items in his backpack. The officer allegedly found a metal tin that had a bag with several opaque rocks that appeared to be fentanyl and unused syringes, the report said.

Both men were taken to the Police Station, where they were booked and released pending the application for warrants.

Depending on results of the drug analysis, Eureka Police will seek charges against the men through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possession of a controlled substance, Werges said.
