Eureka Police arrested a 37-year-old Union man for alleged drug possession following a traffic stop. The man was stopped because officers saw the car the man was driving weave between lanes on Hwy. 109, and the man drove onto the shoulder before returning to the road after turning onto Fourth Street, police reported.

Officers at about 1:40 p.m. Oct. 17 saw the man driving a 2010 Dodge Avenger east on I-44. The man exited the interstate onto Hwy. 109, and he allegedly failed to maintain a single lane while on the highway, the report said.

The man also made a wide turn onto Fourth Street, going onto the shoulder before returning to the road. The officers turned on their cruiser’s lights and sirens shortly after the man made the wide turn, and the man stopped the car at the QuikTrip gas station, 290 E. Fourth St., according to the report.

The man told the officers that the car did not belong to him, and that the Avenger swayed a lot when people drove it. He also said he was one of many people who drive the car, the report said.

Officers learned he was wanted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on two warrants. They arrested the man on the outstanding warrants, according to the report.

When an officer searched the car, he allegedly found a pill in the center console and two halves of a pill capsule in the back seat, the report said.

The man was taken to the Police Station, where he allegedly told an officer the pills belonged to him. He was booked and released, pending the application for a warrant, according to the report.

Depending on results of the drug analysis, Eureka Police will seek charges against the man through the St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possession of a controlled substance, Lt. Brett Grittini said.

Grittini also said the man was issued a summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for failing to maintain a single lane while driving.
