A 72-year-old Eureka man was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated after he hit another car twice. The incident happened at 4:05 p.m. Dec. 27, Eureka Police reported.
The police were called to the Circle K gas station, 100 Old Town Drive, after a driver reported that his car had been hit twice by a 2005 Dodge Durango driven by the 72-year-old. The victim told police he was at a stoplight at Hwy. 109 and Fifth Street when the Durango hit him from behind, a report said.
The victim said he pulled over to the shoulder, and the Durango struck his car again before the suspect drove to the gas station. The victim followed the suspect to the station to exchange information, but when the 72-year-old got out of the SUV, he allegedly fell to the ground and appeared to be intoxicated, according to the report.
When the police contacted the suspect, he allegedly smelled like alcohol, had trouble following directions, mumbled while talking and was unable to keep his balance. The suspect told police he had a couple of beers, but when he was given a field sobriety test, he allegedly failed it, according to the report.
The suspect was arrested for suspicion of DWI and taken to the Eureka Police station, where he took a breath test. The man allegedly had .107 blood-alcohol content. In Missouri, the legal limit is .08 percent.
The man was issued a summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for the DWI charge and was later released to a family member, Lt. David Wilson said.
