A 54-year-old Eureka man was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated after he almost hit a Eureka Police officer who was directing traffic following an accident on Hwy. 109 near the I-44 exit. No one was injured in the accident, police reported.

At about 10:50 p.m. Nov. 26, the officer was assisting following a crash on the highway. The man, who was not involved in the accident, was driving a 2019 Mercedes-Benz on Hwy. 109 and allegedly failed to obey the officer’s orders to stop driving toward the accident, the report said.

The man allegedly appeared to be intoxicated and refused to perform field sobriety tests. Because the man appeared to have trouble keeping his balance, he was arrested. He was taken to the Police Station, where he was booked and released to a sober driver, according to the report.

Eureka Police issued the man a summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for alleged failure to obey a reasonable direction of an officer, driving in a careless and imprudent matter and DWI, Capt. Michael Werges said.
