When an old storage tank caught fire Monday (Oct. 7) at DDP Specialty Electronic Materials (formerly Dow Chemical), 500 Dow Industrial Drive, in Pevely, it produced a lot of flames and smoke, but the blaze wasn’t as bad as it looked, Dunklin Fire Chief Brad Williams said.
“We were dispatched about 3:30 p.m. to DDP,” Williams said. “They had a storage tank in the rear of the facility that had been decommissioned. They were cutting the tank apart and it ignited.
“It looked like a pretty good fire, but it was contained in the storage tank.”
He said no injuries were reported and firefighters put out the blaze in about 20 minutes.
Williams said Tuesday that it looked like the fire was caused when the tank was being cut apart, but the exact cause was not yet known.
“That part is under investigation,” he said.
Williams said several emergency response agencies responded to the call, including the Antonia, Hillsboro, R-7 and Rock Community fire protection districts and the Herculaneum and Festus fire departments, as well as the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District. The Crystal City Fire Department moved up to cover the Dunklin fire station’s calls.
