De Soto Rural firefighters rescued a man and his dog from floodwaters covering Wilson Hollow Road near Vineland Road on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 5, according to Deputy Chief John Scullin.
He said the man, who is older and lives on the road closer to the river, was driving a pickup and after rounding a corner, saw standing water over the road and kept driving.
“I think he underestimated the depth of the water,” Scullin said, adding that the water was about 4 feet deep where the man’s truck got stuck.
Scullin said a bystander saw the stranded pickup with water up to its windows and called 911 at 3 p.m.
Scullin said he and another firefighter arrived within five minutes and determined the man was calm and not in immediate danger. Firefighters used the district’s inflatable boat to rescue the man and his dog, and they were taken to dry land by 3:37 p.m.
The Valle Ambulance District responded to the scene, but neither the man nor the dog needed medical treatment, Scullin said.
“The good thing is there was no current,” he said. “The water was from the creek and river backing up.”
Scullin said the fire district had another call for a water rescue at 8:53 p.m. for a white van in floodwater in the 7700 block of Browns Ford Road.
He said the caller reported a man had driven around a road closed sign and got stuck but was able to get out of the vehicle and get to dry land before firefighters arrived with a boat.
