Evan Robert Birkenmeyer, 29, of Crystal City has been charged with five felonies for allegedly sexually abusing a minor, authorities reported.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged him April 21 with two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of statutory rape, both class D felonies, as well other felonies.

Birkenmeyer faces up to seven years in prison for each of the class D felonies and a maximum of four years for the class E felony.

As of Tuesday, April 26, Birkenmeyer was being held in the Jefferson County Jail on no bond.

“On March 22, we began an investigation of a major crime,” Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said. “On April 20, we arrested the suspect.”

Lewis said the victim was younger than 17, but other than that, he would not release information about the abuse.
