De Soto-area chicken coop destroyed in fire on Thanksgiving

A chicken coop in the 9000 block of Hwy. Y went up in flames on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 23.

Cedar Hill Fire Protection District dispatched to the fire at 7:24 p.m., Assistant Fire Chief David Jones said. Units arrived on the scene at 7:39 p.m.

Jones said the chicken coop was 10 feet away from the house.

“There was some concern the house would catch on fire,” he said.

Jones said crews got to the scene in time to prevent the fire from spreading to the house. He estimated about a dozen chickens inside the coop died because of the fire. No one in the house was injured.

Jones said the fire was accidental and most likely electrical in nature.

De Soto Rural and St. Clair fire protection districts, Big River Ambulance District helped at the scene, he said.

Jones said all crews left the scene at 8:55 p.m.
