A former employee at a Crystal City payday loan shop has been accused of stealing more than $140,000 from the business over a three-year period, court documents show.
Lisa M. Williams, 47, of Bonne Terre has been charged with three counts of stealing more than $25,000, each one a class C felony punishable by three to 10 years in prison.
Williams allegedly stole $140,690.17 between June 2015 through August 2019 from Cash Today, a short-term loan shop at 911 N. Truman Blvd., according to her former boss.
Investigators found a company document indicating Williams stole $38,198.96 in 2017, $27,437.28 in 2018 and $19,179.37 in 2019, the probable-cause statement in the case said.
Williams’ former boss said he confronted her about the missing money, and she allegedly asked him if he wanted her to “turn her stuff in.” Williams was fired from the job, the report said.
Investigators called Williams on Aug. 22 to arrange an in-person interview, and she allegedly said she would call back in a few days. She did not call back, and follow-up phone calls on Aug. 27 and Sept. 21 were not returned, the probable-cause statement said.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed the felony stealing charges against Williams on Dec. 11.
Williams has been issued a summons to appear in Jefferson County Div. 5 Circuit Court on April 5, 2021, court records show.
