Mark Steven Gaia-Mauer, 60, of Arnold has been charged with three felonies for allegedly molesting a girl younger than 14 years old, according to court documents.

Gaia-Mauer reportedly molested the girl several times between 2014 and 2019. The abuse allegedly happened at a home in Arnold and at the pool at the Arnold Recreation Center, the probable-cause statement in the case said.

He was arrested after a social worker received a child abuse hotline call about the abuse, the report said.

Gaia-Mauer’s attorney, John Schleiffarth, said his client “absolutely maintains his innocence.”

“If necessary, his innocence will be proven at trial,” Schleiffarth said.

On Aug. 8, Gaia-Mauer was charged with one count of first-degree child molestation, a class B felony, and two counts of third-degree child molestation, a class C felony. The class B felony is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and each of the class C felonies carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, court records show.

He was released from the Jefferson County Jail on Aug. 16 on a $30,000 bond. He is scheduled for a bond-appearance hearing on Sept. 26 in front of Jefferson County Div. 12 Associate Circuit Judge Tony Manansala, according to court papers.
